Radiation Dose and Cancer Risk of Cardiac Electrophysiology Procedures

چکیده
Electrophysiology study (EPS) and radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) are widely used for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. EPS and RFCA are very complicated procedures, requiring extended periods of time and advanced technologies that vary according to the disease of the patients. Fluoroscopy is used during EPS and RFCA to guide the catheter through the vessels while viewing the fluoroscopy monitor to reach the desired area to examine and monitor the procedure. However, fluoroscopy exposes patients and staff members to radiation, and this can result in possible skin damage, cancer, and Radiation Dose and Cancer Risk of Cardiac Electrophysiology Procedures

Evaluation of Patient's Dose and Estimate of Cancer Risk in Electrophysiology Studies and Ablation in Cath Lab Center of Afshar Hospital, Yazd, Iran
Introduction: Today electrophysiology studies and ablation have been developed due to increasing arrhythmias disorder of heart. In these diagnostic – treatments methods, the use of fluoroscopy can be causes patient radiation dose, therefore evaluation of patient's absorbed dose is necessary to protection of the radiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the absorbed dose in patients under...

Despite the advent of non-fluoroscopic technology, fluoroscopy remains the cornerstone of imaging in most interventional electrophysiological procedures, from diagnostic studies over ablation interventions to device implantation. Moreover, many patients receive additional X-ray imaging, such as cardiac computed tomography and others. More and more complex procedures have the risk to increase th...

The benefits of cardiac imaging are immense, and modern cardiac electrophysiology (EP) requires the extensive and versatile use of a variety of cardiac imaging and radiology-based techniques. In the cardiac electrophysiology lab, doses can range around a reference effective dose (ED) of 15 milliSievert corresponding to 750 chest x-rays for a cardiac radiofrequency ablation, ranging from less th...

Introduction: Coronary angiography is the most common angiographic procedure for diagnosis and treatment of the heart diseases. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the entrance surface dose (ESD), dose area product (DAP), as well as cancer risk in interventional cardiology procedures. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted during July-December 2015 at Shahid Madani Heart Center in Khorramabad...

Introduction: Nowadays ionizing radiation has a considerable contribution in medical diagnostic and treatment. Using ionizing radiation is increasing rapidly, so biological effects of ionizing radiation should be considered more. X-rays in the range of diagnostic radiology have hazardous effects and risks that are defined as random effects. These effects obey the LNT hypothesis that occur at lo...
